Tuesdays are quickly becoming my favorite day of the week for fun events downtown, and tonight’s event at Jo’s Coffee Downtown has me all in a tizzy, because tonight they will be screening Hedwig and the Angry Inch as part of their Musical Tuesdays series. The screening is totally free and starts at 8pm, but get there early to get a good seat and some of their amazing food.

About Hedwig: First, let me just say that this is one of the most fun, beautiful, touching, and endearing movies that I have ever seen. I love it so much I saw the off-Broadway production of it three times at Zack Scott Theater. Hedwig, played exquisitely by creator John Cameron Mitchell, is a post-op transsexual girl from East Berlin whose life rarely manages to turn out the way she’d hoped. This is a story about love in every beautiful and disturbing way that it manifests itself and how uplifting and ravaging it can be at the same time. It’s a story that gets deep in your guts and is only made more poignant by the amazing songs created by Stephen Trask that move from pop songs about candy and wigs to rock ballads that Poison couldn’t touch with a ten foot pole. You will go home surprised and moved. I promise.

You can find Jo’s Coffee at 242 West 2nd St.
