See: ACL Weekend Kick Off Parties, September 15
by: Laurie Lyons and Amber Kokas
You can’t start a weekend of music without a few good kick-off shows, so here are a few you won’t want to miss (sorry for the redundancies in names, totally not my fault):
D-Train Presents: ACL Kick off Party at Hudson on Fifth
8pm
Free Show
Hudson on Fifth-301 W 5th St
If you’re looking for a good $Free.99 show before the big one, don’t miss some of Austin’s smoothest performers as Music With Substance, Dru Fay, Tee Double, and DJ Mike Swing get you feelin’ groovy for the evening. The one and only D-Train and our partner website theyayornay.com are hosting the event, so get there early and lounge late.
ACL Kick Off Party at The Parish
9pm
Free Show
The Parish-214 E 6th St
Go ahead and rock out with your socks out as some of Austin’s most fun and dynamic bands treat you to an evening of free music to get your juices flowing for the main event over the weekend. For your admission price of zero dollars, you get BK and Mr E, The Canvas Waiting, Electric Touch, and Eyes Burn Electric all under one roof. It’s also an all ages show, so you can bring your mom, if you want.
Art Disaster 13 at Beauty Bar
8pm-2am
$3 with RSVP/$5 without
Beauty Bar-617 E. 7th Street
City of Fire, Knuckle Rumbler, and Beauty Bar present us with Art Disaster 13, a biannual music showcase with 8 bands and 3 DJs taking over both stages all night long. And this year they will be featuring some of the BEST acts from around Central Texas. It’s a “pre-three-days-in-the-sun-with-music-event” that you and you and all your tag alongs will NOT want to miss!
Drink specials all night from Miller Light and Moonshine, and when I say special I mean CHEAPER THAN CHEAP SPECIAL from 8pm – 9pm while supplies last. (wink wink)
Listen to KVRX for music from the acts and interviews from the bands and lookout for ticket giveaways on Ultra8201.
RSVP on www.ArtDisaster.com or Do512.com. GET A FREE MIXTAPE WITH A TRACK FROM EACH ARTIST WHEN YOU RSVP! Jim Marshall’s “Jack & Jim” Photo Exhibit at ACL Live at the Moody Theater
Opens Thurs, Sept 15-tour at 11am; Ongoing Mon-Fri 11am
Free
ACL Live at the Moody Theater-310 W Willie Nelson Blvd
If you’d rather weather the calm before the storm with something a little more relaxing (and quiet), but still want to be a part of the musical weekend, you’ll want to check out the “Jack & Jim” gallery at Moody Theater, hosted by Jack Daniels and Jim Marshall LLC. This exhibit will feature 30 original photographs by famed music photographer Jim Marshall, including Johnny Cash flipping the bird at San Quentin Prison and Jimi Hendrix burning his Strat. The exhibit runs through Fall 2014, so Austinites have plenty of time to check it out, but out of towners, you may want to squeeze it in before a nice lunch in the 2nd Street District. Full review, coming soon!
